Jean Cleere
Jean Cleere came and spoke with students at the school. Jean is from Newton, Iowa. Jean lost her husband, Jim, during the attacks on 9-11. She wants to tell his story and others and wants us to "Never Forget". Students led a couple of interview sessions and got a lot of great first hand information.
Jean shares her husband's final two phone calls that he left on 9-11. She was able to record them from her answering machine and want to share them with the 8th graders this year.
Jean's license plate says, "NeverForget". Below is a race car with that same idea from
Mike Vander Molen.
Thanks Mike for bringing it to school! Jean was able to see the car and meet Mike as well! Thanks Mike!
Author Cheryl Mullenbach talks about Moira Smith. Smith was the only NYPD female officer that died during 9-11. http://www.cherylmullenbachink.com/books.html to see her book.
Students Skype with Sophia from the 9-11 Tribute Center in New York. They also Skyped with Steve a retired New York City Fire Fighter that helped in the recovery process after 9-11. Wow! Great experience and information.
Slideshow from session.
Mr. Peter Lamb again was willing to help us out. Mr. Lamb is a retired firefighter from the Boston area. He works with firefighters from all over. Thank you Mr. Lamb!
8th graders get to talk with Drew Gallagher from ESPN. Drew works for College Game Day each Saturday, but took the time to talk with students about Welles Crowther, The Man in the Red Bandana. Drew and Tom Rinaldi, along with others, worked to create the ESPN documentary of Welles. Students were able to learn about Welles, video production, and more. Thanks Drew!
Alison Crowther
Alison Crowther, the mother of Welles Crowther, continues to work with LS 8th graders as she talked about her son that was lost during 9-11. Welles was credited for saving up to 12 people on 9-11. Drew Gallagher created a video about Welles. Honor Crowther wrote a children's book that talks about her brother's actions that day and also helps kids learn about 9-11. One class got to talk with Honor.
Jean Cleere, who lost her husband during 9-11, got to take some time to talk with Alison as the two of them were connected for the first time because of this unit. Great experience.
